Sri Lanka's North Central Province combines ancient reservoirs, historic cities, and protected wildlife habitats. At the centre of this landscape is Minneriya National Park, established around the historic Minneriya Tank built by King Mahasen in 286 AD. As water levels recede during the dry season, grasslands emerge around the reservoir, attracting wild elephants from surrounding forests. The seasonal gathering is one of the park's defining wildlife experiences.

In this guide, you will read more about the Minneriya National Park elephant gathering, Minneriya National Park jeep safari details, entrance information, the best time to visit Minneriya National Park, and how to reach the park from Colombo and Kandy.

What Is Minneriya National Park Sri Lanka?

Minneriya National Park was established in 1997 in the Polonnaruwa District of Sri Lanka's North Central Province. It covers 8,889.411 hectares and centres on the ancient Minneriya Tank, a reservoir built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century CE.

The park sits 182 km from Colombo, within Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle alongside Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Polonnaruwa. Along with Kaudulla and Girithale, Minneriya forms part of one of Sri Lanka's Important Bird Areas.

As the reservoir level drops during the dry season, grasslands emerge around the tank and attract elephants from surrounding forest areas. , creating the annual event Minneriya National Park Sri Lanka is now known for globally.

Minneriya National Park Elephant Gathering

The Minneriya National Park elephant gathering is a seasonal movement of wild elephants towards the grasslands around the Minneriya Tank during the dry season. During August and September, elephant herds commonly gather around the tank as the water level falls and grasslands become exposed.

Elephants arrive from forests across Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee Districts, following the waterline as the tank recedes. The Minneriya National Park elephant gathering is commonly seen around the tank in the evening during the dry season. Key behaviours include herd bathing, calves playing, territorial displays between bulls, and prolonged evening grazing.

Beyond elephants, Minneriya National Park holds 24 mammal species and over 160 bird species.

Best Time to Visit Minneriya National Park

The best time to visit Minneriya National Park for the elephant gathering is June to September. July and August are the peak months, when elephant numbers are highest and sightings are most consistent.

May marks the start of the dry season and is a viable option if you want to avoid the heaviest July and August crowds. From October onward, the North-East Monsoon begins. The tank refills, elephants disperse into surrounding forests, and large-scale sightings become less predictable. The park stays open year-round, but dry-season scale gatherings are not typical from October to April.

If elephant numbers drop in September or October, guides often redirect to Kaudulla National Park, 30 km north, where the migration continues into November.

Minneriya National Park Jeep Safari

All visitors to Minneriya National Park must enter in an authorised jeep with a licensed driver. Private vehicles and tuk-tuks are not permitted inside the park.

A Minneriya National Park jeep safari runs twice daily. Each jeep holds up to 6 people; 3 to 4 passengers is the most comfortable arrangement. Evening safaris consistently produce larger elephant sightings, particularly in the 4pm to 6pm window. Morning safaris are cooler and better suited for birdwatching. The Department of Wildlife Conservation provides a wildlife tracker with each jeep, subject to availability. Tipping the tracker and driver is standard practice. Each Minneriya National Park jeep safari session lasts approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
