Embark on a journey through time. Transport your mind to an era whose remnants still surround you to this very day. Learn about the incredible history and horrors of the Eternal City as you explore the centre of Ancient Rome. It is hard to imagine what these iconic landmarks would have looked like in their prime, but with the entrance to the archaeological site and complimentary headsets, you will gain a better understanding of the area with the help from your experienced and professional guide. Your guided 'Passeggiata' will include a visit to: - Colosseum The Colosseum is the world’s largest amphitheatre, built by the Romans in 80 AD. More than 50,000 people would have gathered here to watch gladiatorial contests and many other kinds of public spectacles. Known also as the Flavian, its name was appropriately given as it was built on the site where once stood a 115-foot-tall bronze statue of the emperor Colossus of Nero. Whilst visiting this giant amphitheatre, take some time to consider the discrimination in Roman society and the fate of the fighters in the gruesome blood sport at the gladiator’s playground. - Roman forum In its heyday, the Roman Forum was the very heart of the ancient world, crowded with people from all corners of the empire. From elections, public speeches, gladiator matches, and even criminal trials, it was from this very location that the Romans transformed civilisation. Your guided 'Passeggiata' will include a visit to; - Palatine Hill It is thought that this area is where it all began. In Rome there is a very fine line between myth and historical fact. According to Roman mythology, twin brothers Remus and Romulus were abandoned by their parents on the hill and discovered and nursed by a wolf before being found by a shepherd. Legend has it that when they became adults they decided to build a city where the wolf had found them. After quarrelling about the location, Remus was said to have been murdered by his brother, thus leaving Romulus as the founder of the city to which he gave his name. Over a hundred years ago archaeologist Rodolfo Lanciani, excavated a site on the hill and uncovered the remains of an Iron Age settlement dating back to 900 BC giving evidence to the existence of the early founders of Rome. Important information – There may be restrictions Due to the Colosseum’s reservation policy, the scheduled visiting hours cannot be modified. Your guided tour of the historical city center starts from here! The Cathedral of Naples is named "cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta" but everyone knows it as the "Duomo of San Gennaro" since it is dedicated to the patron saint San Gennaro and to the famous miracle of the melting blood. Walking along Via Dei Tribunali you will be completely immersed in one of the most colorful and unique Naples's atmosphere! Shops, restaurants, cafès and many little boutiques all around you! Here you will taste the famous Tarallo Napoletano (a spicy salted cookie), visit the oldest factory of the city and choose your favorite flavor ! Traditional "nzogna and pepe" with almonds or with new flavors. In the historical center of Naples, there is magical place; the San Gregorio Armeno alley also called in Italian "la strada dei presepi". San Gregorio Armeno is one of the most amazing attractions in Naples. You can admire numerous shops with creative nativity scenes and figurines in all variations. Besides the Jesus- and Madonna figurines you will also find detailed copies of pizzerias, fruit markets, all household objects, gastronomic delights, exotic animals, and sometimes even caricatured politicians and football players. They are all hand made from local artisans; their art has been handed down from father to son and each crib is studied in detail. You can get thousand of accessories and building material for your Neapolitan crib. Visiting one of the oldest factories of San Gregorio you'll be gifted with a typical lucky charm: the Napolitan Corno ! The Basilica of Santa Chiara is a Gothic Church located in the Square of San Domenico Maggiore; It's the ideal place to escape from the noise of the city; the complex has a beautiful monastery, a basilica and a small museum with a religious library. Spaccanapoli is the straight and narrow main street that traverses the old, historic center of the city of Naples, Italy. The name is a popular usage and means, literally, "Naples splitter", in fact it is a very long road and from above it seems to divide the city in two. Time for another tasting... Flanked by the spiky Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo and the Basilica di Santa Chiara, Piazza del Gesu Nuovo is one of Naples' most beautiful squares. It hosts the Church of the Gesu Nuovo with its unsightly façade which was originally part of a late 15th-century palace, covered with pyramidal extrusions in dark basalt. In the middle of the square stand superbly the Guglia dell' Immacolata; a wild pinnacle that melts roccoco and gothic art richly decorated with statues of saints, putti and frills. The Teatro San Carlo is a wonderful theater whose construction was ordered from the King Charles III of Bourbon decades before the birth of the Scala in Milan. It is the oldest opera house in the world still working. From the most famous dancers to the major composers all the great artists loved this theater and here they wanted to represent their art. The Galleria Umberto I was built at the end of the 19th century as part of a long project to rebuild and renovate the city of Naples. It is a light-filled shopping arcade crowned with a domed glass and steel roof and it is is elegantly decorated with murals and sculptures. It is a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, and well worth a visit! Piazza del Plebiscito is, without doubts, one of the most beautiful squares of Italy. It is a noble semicircular square built on the model of the Pantheon in Rome and it is embraced by a neoclassical colonnade. The two equestrian statues located in front of the church, represent Ferdinand I of Bourbon and Charles III of Bourbon and they are a masterpiece of Antonio Canova. According to the legend, it's impossible to walk through the two statues being blindfolded, due to a cuss from the Queen Margherita. She used to promise the freedom to the slaves who succeeded in the enterprise, but this never happened! You will continue passing through the square of San Domenico Maggiore Square and here you could taste a typical "cuoppo napoletano " a paper horn filled with many fried delights... super typical street food... you'll be hooked! Via Toledo has always been considered the most important avenue of Naples and it connects the area of the decumani to Piazza del Plebiscito. On the right side of via Toledo develops the narrow streets of the Spanish Quarters, here colours, smells and flavors trace the history of Naples. Via Toledo also houses one of the most beautiful subway stations in the world: toledo Station also named the "station of art". Dulcis in fundo (as we say in Italy)...time for a pizza! Not the "regular" one... but the Piazza Portafoglio, which is a pizza folded on itslef (for this reason, wallet that is portafoglio in italian) ...in one of the best pizzerias of Italy ! Last but not least... time for dessert... sfogliatella or baba or and a delicious espresso in Piazza Plebiscito!
