Detailed plan

Day 1 : Scottsdale

Arrive at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Scottsdale, the chic resort town on Phoenix's eastern edge. Scottsdale's Old Town is a walkable, sun-drenched neighbourhood of art galleries, upscale boutiques, restaurants, and rooftop bars — an ideal introduction to Arizona's blend of desert luxury and Southwestern culture. Spend the evening in Old Town, where the desert sunset paints the sky in extraordinary shades of amber and rose.

Day 2 : Scottsdale

Begin at the Desert Botanical Garden — 140 acres of the Sonoran Desert's most extraordinary plants, including the world's most extensive desert plant collection, arranged along beautifully designed walking trails. The cacti at sunrise are unforgettable. Spend midday exploring Old Town Scottsdale's galleries and the Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West. In the afternoon, visit Taliesin West — Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and studio, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a masterwork of organic architecture that seems to grow from the desert floor.

Day 3 : Sedona

Drive two hours north from Scottsdale to Sedona, one of the most visually dramatic towns in the United States. The approach along State Route 179 is jaw-dropping: towering red sandstone buttes — Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte — rise from the desert floor in formations of surreal beauty. Optional stop en route: Montezuma Castle National Monument, just off I-17, is a remarkably well-preserved 5-storey Native American cliff dwelling built into a limestone recess 900 years ago — a 20-minute detour well worth making. Alternatively, Out of Africa Wildlife Park near Camp Verde offers a more leisurely stop for families. Check in to your Sedona resort and spend the early evening at Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Village — a beautifully designed complex of galleries and studios set among gardens and fountains, open late and a 10-minute drive from most Sedona resorts. Catch sunset from Airport Mesa for one of Arizona's finest panoramic viewpoints to close out a memorable first evening in red rock country.

Day 4 : Sedona

Morning: take a thrilling open-air Pink Jeep Tour through Sedona's backcountry — the classic way to access terrain and viewpoints completely unreachable on foot, with expert local guides narrating the geology, mythology, and spiritual significance of the red rock formations. The Broken Arrow and Vortex tours are the most popular routes. Afternoon: surrender to an indulgent spa treatment at your resort — Sedona's wellness industry is among the finest in the American Southwest, drawing on the tradition of the surrounding energy vortexes and Native American healing practices. With Tlaquepaque already explored yesterday evening, today's pace is intentionally focused: adventure in the morning, stillness in the afternoon.

Day 5 : Grand Canyon

Drive approximately two hours north from Sedona to the Grand Canyon South Rim — one of the defining natural wonders of the planet. No photograph or description quite prepares you for the first view over the rim. Check in to your hotel and spend the rest of the day walking the Rim Trail, stopping at Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Desert View. At sunset, the canyon undergoes a stunning transformation as layered walls of limestone, sandstone, and shale shift colour minute by minute. Hotel note: El Tovar, Kachina Lodge, and Thunderbird Lodge are located inside the park on the South Rim — ideal for early morning rim access and the most sought-after reservations at the canyon (book months ahead). The Grand Hotel at the Grand Canyon and Grand Canyon Railway Hotel are just outside the park entrance, offering more availability and a slightly easier check-in experience. Optional alternative (June–September only): if travelling in summer, consider the North Rim instead — cooler temperatures, dramatically fewer crowds, and equally breathtaking views from a higher elevation. The North Rim is open mid-May to mid-October only.

Day 6 : Grand Canyon

Wake early and hike the upper portion of Bright Angel Trail — one of the most rewarding hikes in the National Park system, descending through geological rock layers spanning nearly 2 billion years. Important: only hike as far as the 1.5-Mile Resthouse unless you are an experienced hiker comfortable with significant elevation change and desert heat. The trail descends steeply and returning uphill in afternoon sun is far more demanding than it appears going down — this is the most common cause of emergency rescues at the Grand Canyon. Carry at least 1 litre of water per person per hour, wear sun protection, and start before 7am. Return to the rim for lunch at the historic El Tovar Lodge (1905), the finest dining on the canyon's edge. In the afternoon, drive the Desert View Drive east along the South Rim, stopping at dramatic overlooks and ending at the Desert View Watchtower — a 1930s stone tower designed by Mary Colter at 7,400 feet above sea level.

Day 7 : Phoenix

Drive south through Arizona's ponderosa pine forests, stopping in Flagstaff — a charming college town at 7,000 feet elevation on the original Route 66. Browse independent bookshops and coffee roasters on Heritage Square, visit the Museum of Northern Arizona for context on Native American cultures, and enjoy lunch before the two-hour drive back to Phoenix for your final night.
