Detailed plan

Day 1 : Salt Lake City

Arrive at Salt Lake City International Airport and transfer to your hotel in the heart of the city. Salt Lake City sits at the foot of the Wasatch Range at an elevation of over 4,200 feet — the mountains rise dramatically to the east, giving the city one of the most striking backdrops of any urban centre in the American West. Spend the afternoon exploring Temple Square, the breathtaking centrepiece of the city and headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — a 35-acre complex of beautifully maintained gardens, fountains, and landmark buildings. Stroll through the vibrant downtown streets, browse the galleries and restaurants of the Gateway District, and settle in for a relaxed dinner as you prepare for the open road ahead.

Day 2 : Jackson

Set off on the first great drive of the trip — approximately five hours north through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the United States. The route takes you through the Wasatch-Cache National Forest and up into Wyoming, with the jagged peaks of the Snake River Range growing larger through the windscreen as you approach. Arrive in Jackson, the characterful Western town that serves as the gateway to both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Explore the famous Town Square — anchored by four arches built from thousands of naturally shed elk antlers — and browse the independent galleries, outfitters, and restaurants that line the boardwalk streets. Dinner here tends to be excellent; Jackson punches well above its size in both cuisine and atmosphere.

Day 3 : Jackson

Spend a full day in Grand Teton National Park — one of the most visually dramatic national parks in the United States, where the Teton Range rises nearly 7,000 feet above the valley floor without the gradual foothills that typically cushion such mountains. Begin at Jenny Lake, a glacially carved alpine lake at the base of the tallest Tetons, where a short ferry crosses to the western shore and a trail leads to the thundering Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point viewpoint. In the afternoon, drive south to the Mormon Row Historic District — a photogenic row of historic homestead barns framed against the full Teton panorama, among the most photographed landscapes in America. Keep your eyes on the sage flats and wetlands along Antelope Flats Road; moose, bison, and pronghorn are frequently spotted throughout the day.

Day 4 : West Yellowstone

Drive north through Grand Teton and enter Yellowstone National Park via the South Entrance — the transition from one extraordinary park to the other is seamless and stunning. Yellowstone is the world's first national park and sits atop one of the largest active volcanic systems on earth; the geothermal features you encounter today are among the most concentrated and spectacular on the planet. Make your first stop at the Grand Prismatic Spring — the largest hot spring in the United States and one of the most otherworldly landscapes imaginable, its vivid rings of orange, yellow, and deep blue visible from the overlook trail above. Continue to Old Faithful Geyser, which erupts approximately every 90 minutes to heights of up to 180 feet; the adjacent Old Faithful Inn, a 1904 National Historic Landmark built from native lodgepole pine, is worth exploring in its own right. Check in to your hotel in West Yellowstone for the next two nights.

Day 5 : West Yellowstone

Dedicate today to Yellowstone's most diverse and dramatic landscapes — a day that moves from geological spectacle to wildlife theatre. Begin at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where the Yellowstone River plunges 308 feet over the Lower Falls into a vivid yellow-walled canyon nearly 1,000 feet deep; Artist Point on the South Rim is one of the great viewpoints in the American national park system. Drive north to Mammoth Hot Springs, where mineral-rich thermal waters have built extraordinary cascading terraces of white and cream-coloured travertine over thousands of years — an ever-changing landscape unlike anything else in the park. In the late afternoon, slow down through Hayden Valley — the broad, open grassland corridor that is Yellowstone's premier wildlife-watching ground. Bison herds numbering in the hundreds roam the valley floor; wolves, bears, and coyotes are regularly spotted at dawn and dusk by patient observers along the roadside pullouts.

Day 6 : Salt Lake City

Begin the five-to-six-hour drive south back to Salt Lake City, but allow time for a rewarding detour along the way: Bear Lake, straddling the Utah-Idaho border, is nicknamed the Caribbean of the Rockies for the vivid turquoise colour of its waters — a striking geological anomaly caused by calcium carbonate suspended in the lake. The lakeside town of Garden City is the place to stop for a raspberry milkshake, a local institution that has been drawing road-trippers off the highway for decades. Return to Salt Lake City in the evening, check in to your hotel, and raise a glass to one of the great American road trips.

Day 7 : Salt Lake City

Enjoy a final morning in Salt Lake City before transferring to Salt Lake City International Airport for your departure. Seven days, two of America's most iconic national parks, a thousand miles of mountain road, and geysers, glacial lakes, and bison herds that no photograph will ever quite do justice. The American West has a way of staying with you long after the tyres have stopped rolling.
