Detailed plan

Day 1 : San Antonio

Arrive at San Antonio International Airport and transfer to your Riverwalk hotel, positioned right on the canal. San Antonio's pace is warmer and gentler than Texas' other big cities; you feel it the moment you step onto the River Walk. This evening, begin with a Rio San Antonio Cruise — a 40-minute narrated boat tour along the canal that gives you a perfect first orientation of the city's history and architecture from the water. Afterwards, choose a table on the waterfront and let the magic of San Antonio settle over you on night one. For dinner, order San Antonio's signature dish: puffy tacos, a local invention unique to the city, or breakfast tacos at one of the River Walk's beloved Tex-Mex cantinas.

Day 2 : San Antonio

Begin at The Alamo — the 18th-century Spanish Franciscan mission where, in 1836, a small band of Texan defenders held out for 13 days against the Mexican Army. The Shrine of Texas Liberty is smaller than most visitors expect and all the more powerful for it. Cross the plaza to San Fernando Cathedral, the oldest continuously operating cathedral in Texas, built in 1731. In the afternoon, make your way to Market Square (El Mercado) — the largest Mexican market in the U.S., filled with artisans, food stalls, and mariachi music — and the nearby Spanish Governor's Palace. This keeps the day focused and unhurried, allowing you to fully absorb the Spanish colonial heart of San Antonio without feeling rushed.

Day 3 : San Antonio

San Antonio is home to the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas — the San Antonio Missions. Four 18th-century Spanish colonial missions beyond the Alamo are preserved in the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park: Mission Concepción, Mission San José (the grandest, with its intricate carved stone facade), Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada, all connected by a 9-mile trail along the San Antonio River. Return to the Pearl District for the evening — a beautifully restored 19th-century brewery complex housing San Antonio's finest restaurants, artisan boutiques, and a vibrant social scene. Optional morning enhancement (weekends only): if visiting on a Saturday or Sunday, begin the day at the Pearl Farmers' Market before the missions — one of the best markets in Texas. Alternatively, book in advance for a hands-on cooking class at the Culinary Institute of America San Antonio, located within the Pearl complex, for an immersive introduction to regional Tex-Mex and Hill Country cuisine.

Day 4 : San Antonio

Ride the elevator to the top of the Tower of the Americas — 750 feet above the city — with an observation deck and revolving restaurant offering sweeping views of San Antonio, the missions, and the Hill Country horizon. In the afternoon, explore the King William Historic District — San Antonio's most elegant neighbourhood of tree-shaded Victorian-era mansions built by 19th-century German merchants, now filled with independent galleries and antique shops. Continue into the adjacent La Villita (the Little Village) — San Antonio's original settlement, now a charming arts enclave of stone and adobe buildings housing artisan studios, boutiques, and galleries. The two neighbourhoods sit side by side and make for a perfectly paced afternoon. End with a final evening stroll along the River Walk as the lights shimmer on the water.

Day 5 : San Antonio

Enjoy a final breakfast on the River Walk before checking out and transferring to San Antonio International Airport. Five days is barely enough time to scratch the surface of a city that has been layering history, culture, and flavour for 300 years. San Antonio has a way of making visitors promise to return.
