Detailed plan

Day 1 : Washington DC

Arrive at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport or Dulles International Airport and transfer to your hotel. After check-in, head straight to the National Mall for an evening sunset memorials walk — the single most powerful first impression Washington DC can offer. As the light fades, visit the Lincoln Memorial, the haunting Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, and the WWII Memorial when they are at their most beautiful and least crowded. The monuments are illuminated after dark and the Mall takes on a quality unlike anything in the daytime. This is Washington at its most quietly extraordinary. (Note: the Washington Monument, Capitol tours, and the National Museum of African American History & Culture all require advance timed-entry reservations — book these online before your trip to avoid disappointment.)

Day 2 : Washington DC

Begin the morning at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum — the most visited museum in the United States — where the original Wright Brothers' Flyer, Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, and a real lunar module sit within walking distance of each other. Allow a full morning here; it rewards unhurried exploration. In the afternoon, board the Big Bus Hop-On Hop-Off for a comprehensive sweep of Washington's iconic landmarks: White House, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Capitol Building, and Washington Monument. The bus format lets you pause at whichever site calls to you most. (Tip: the National Museum of Natural History, Museum of American History, and African American History & Culture Museum are all excellent — save one for Day 3 or 4 if your schedule allows. The African American History Museum in particular requires advance timed-entry tickets booked well ahead.)

Day 3 : Washington DC

Spend the morning in Georgetown — Washington's most picturesque neighbourhood, where Federal and Georgian townhouses line cobblestone streets and the C&O Canal towpath offers a beautiful waterside walk. Browse Wisconsin Avenue and M Street's boutiques and café scene. In the afternoon, cross the Potomac to Arlington National Cemetery — the most sacred burial ground in the U.S., where the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is guarded around the clock and President Kennedy's grave is marked by an eternal flame. (Practical note: Georgetown and Arlington are about 3 miles apart. The DC Circulator bus connects Georgetown to Rosslyn Metro, where you cross into Arlington on foot — plan 20–25 minutes each way. Comfortable shoes are essential; Arlington Cemetery alone involves considerable walking across uneven terrain.) Return via the Georgetown Waterfront Park as dusk settles over the Potomac.

Day 4 : Washington DC

Devote today to Capitol Hill. Begin with a guided tour of the United States Capitol — walking through the Rotunda, National Statuary Hall, and corridors where American history has been made for over two centuries. Directly behind the Capitol, the Library of Congress is one of the most beautiful interiors in America: the Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building, with marble columns, mosaic floors, and painted ceilings, is extraordinary and entirely free. In the afternoon, explore the Supreme Court building and the charming residential streets of Capitol Hill before a final Mall evening stroll.

Day 5 : Washington DC

Enjoy a final morning in the capital — a last visit to the neighbourhood Eastern Market, the oldest continuously operating public market on Capitol Hill, is a perfect send-off before your transfer to the airport.
