8 Things You Need to Know Before Visiting Bali Safari and Marine Park

Spending a morning at Bali Safari and Marine Park is a unique Bali experience. You might see a lion stroll past your tram, spot a Komodo dragon resting in the shade, and watch a traditional Balinese legend come to life on a huge stage by the afternoon. Bali Safari isn’t just a quick stop for photos. It’s an active conservation park in Gianyar with over a thousand animals, and your visit depends a lot on how you plan it. If you choose the wrong ticket, arrive at the wrong time, or skip the Night Safari, you could miss out on the highlights. To help you make the most of your trip, here are eight things to know before you go, including tips on tickets, timing, shows, food, and other details that booking sites often leave out.

1. The Bali Safari Sits in Gianyar, Closer to Ubud Than the Beaches

Many first-time visitors think the Bali Safari is close to the hotels in Kuta or Seminyak, but it is not. Taman Safari in Bali covers three villages in Gianyar Regency, along the Prof. Ida Bagus Mantra bypass road, so you will need to plan your travel time differently.

  • The park is about 17 km from Denpasar and around 30 km from Kuta.
  • Plan for a 60 to 90 minute drive from the southern beach areas, and expect a longer trip if there is traffic.
  • The park offers a shuttle service that you can book in advance, with pick-up points in Kuta, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Seminyak, Jimbaran, and Ubud.

Tribe Travel Tip: Plan to visit it between Ubud and Sanur to avoid having to travel back and forth across the island.

2. The Bali Safari Park Is a Conservation Centre, Not Just a Zoo

Bali Safari Park opened in 2007 as part of Taman Safari Indonesia. Unlike a traditional zoo, it focuses on conservation. The park is home to over 1,000 animals from more than 120 species, including rare animals such as Komodo dragons, orangutans, and the Bali starling.

  • The Bali starling is critically endangered and found only on Bali, so seeing one here is special.
  • Animals at the park are grouped by region, including Indonesia, India, and Africa.
  • Inside the park, you can find the Hindu temple Pura Safari and a nine-metre-tall Ganesha statue.
  • The park is a member of SEAZA and other zoo conservation networks.

Tribe Travel Tip: The Bali starling is truly rare. If you want to see one, just ask a keeper for help.

3. Your Ticket Decides Your Day, Starting With the Bali Safari Jungle Hopper

Many visitors make mistakes here. The Bali Safari Jungle Hopper is the most popular ticket, but there are several options, and you cannot swap one for another.

Ticket

Core inclusions

Best for

Jungle Hopper

Safari Journey tram, animal, tiger and elephant presentations

A first full-day visit

Jungle Hopper Legend

Jungle Hopper plus the Bali Agung Show

Culture plus wildlife

Dragon Package

Jungle Hopper plus lunch at Uma Restaurant

Adding a sit-down meal

Night Safari

Evening tram, walking safari, BBQ dinner, fire show

After-dark visits

Inclusions do shift, so confirm on the official site before paying.

Tribe Travel Tip: If you want to see the Bali Agung Show, the Legend ticket is usually a more affordable option than buying a separate ticket.

4. The Safari Journey Crosses Three Worlds in One Tram Ride

The highlight of a Bali safari is the Safari Journey. This guided tram takes you through open areas where animals wander freely nearby. The route covers three regions: Indonesia, India, and Africa.

  • In the African savannah, you’ll see lions, zebras, giraffes, and hippos.
  • The Indian zone features rhinos.
  • The Indonesian jungle is where you’ll find orangutans and Sumatran tigers.
  • A live guide shares information about each habitat as you go by.

This is the main attraction for most visitors, since the animals live in open habitats instead of behind glass. The tram is enclosed, so you can enjoy close views safely.

Tribe Travel Tip: Book the earliest Safari Journey, since animals are usually more active before it gets hot later in the day.

5. The Headline Animals, and the Facts Worth Knowing

Part of the excitement on a Bali safari is recognising the animals before the tram passes by. The park organises its animals by region, and some of the largest creatures have facts that often surprise visitors.

  • Tigers are the biggest of the big cats. They can weigh up to 350 kg and eat as much as 27 kg of meat in one night.
  • Elephants eat about 200 kg of food and drink 150 litres of water each day. Their herds are led by the oldest and most experienced female.
  • Hippos are the third-largest land mammals in the world and can weigh up to 3500 kg.
  • Out of the five rhino species alive today, three are found in Asia: the Indian, Javan, and Sumatran rhinos.

6. The Bali Agung Show Is the Cultural Heavyweight

Many visitors see shows as just something extra, but the Bali Agung Show at Bali Safari is different. Held inside the Bali Theatre, it tells the story of King Sri Jaya Pangus and his Chinese wife, Kang Ching Wie.

  • Over 150 dancers and musicians perform alongside live animals in a theatre that can hold up to 1,200 people.
  • The show runs from Tuesday to Sunday at 2:30 pm, is closed on Mondays, and lasts about an hour with narration in English. As show schedules may change, it's best to check the official Bali Safari schedule before your visit.
  • When you enter through the Ganesha statue gateway, you go straight into the theatre.

7. Night Safari and Varuna Turn the Park Into Something Else After Dark

There’s more to see after dark. When the sun sets, Bali Safari and Marine Park offers a whole new experience, now with an added underwater show.

  • The Night Safari takes place from about 6 pm to 9 pm. You’ll ride in a special caged tram, enjoy a fire dance, and have a BBQ dinner.
  • At night, the animals are much more active, so you’ll get to see the big cats up close.
  • Varuna, held inside what the park calls Asia’s largest aquarium, is Indonesia’s first underwater theatrical dining show. CNN named it Best Outstanding Tourism Innovation.

8. Timing, Food and the Small Print Make or Break Your Visit

Planning is key for a great Bali safari. If you sort out the details, everything else will go smoothly.

  • The safari park is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm. Try to get there right when it opens to avoid the crowds.
  • The best time to visit is during the dry season, from April to October, when the weather is reliable and the animals are most active.
  • You can't bring food or drinks inside, except for baby food. There are places to eat on-site, like the Tsavo Lion Restaurant, where you can have a meal next to the lion enclosure.
  • There aren't any ATMs in the park, so make sure to bring cash or a card with you.
  • Kids under 3 get in for free, and children aged 3 to 12 pay the child rate.

Plan Your Bali Safari Adventure with Holiday Tribe

Bali Safari is best enjoyed if you plan ahead. With options like the Jungle Hopper ticket, a Safari Journey through three regions, the Bali Agung Show, and a Night Safari that offers a completely different experience from the daytime, you can easily spend a whole day here. Since it’s in Gianyar, it fits well with a trip to Ubud. If you get your tickets and timing sorted, it can be one of the most memorable family days on the island. If you prefer everything arranged for you, Holiday Tribe can plan and customise your Bali holiday, so you can relax knowing your day is set. You can start planning at holidaytribe.ai.
