With so many culturally diverse cities in Thailand, choosing where to go can seem overwhelming. Luckily, the most rewarding cities in Thailand are close together, easy to get to, and each has its own unique vibe. Whether you’re after grand temples, tropical beaches, ancient ruins, or cool mountain air, there’s a city for you. This guide will walk you through seven of the best cities in Thailand to help you pick the perfect stops for your holiday itinerary.
Most travellers begin their journey in Bangkok, and it’s easy to see why. The city has a bit of everything, from impressive temples in the morning to delicious street food at night. Getting around is simple, and there are plenty of day outings to choose from. The Chao Phraya River flows through the city, with Wat Arun on one side and lively rooftop bars on the other.
Tribe Travel Tip: The BTS Skytrain is the best way to skip Bangkok's traffic. If you need a taxi or tuk-tuk, use the Grab app to make sure you get a fair price.
Chiang Mai is perfect if you love culture, mountains, and a slower pace. It’s the most popular city in the northern region and one of the oldest cities in Thailand, surrounded by ancient walls and a moat, with more than 300 temples close together and easy to explore on foot. Don’t miss local dishes like khao soi, a rich coconut curry noodle soup that’s unique to this area.
Tribe Travel Tip: Visit in mid-April for Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival. Or come in November for the Yi Peng lantern festival, which is one of the most beautiful events in Southeast Asia.
Phuket is Thailand’s biggest island and one of the top beach spots in Southeast Asia. It’s famous for clear blue waters, exciting nightlife, and a relaxed tropical vibe. If you want a change from the beach, head to Phuket Old Town to see pastel-coloured Sino-Portuguese buildings and enjoy cosy local cafes.
Tribe Travel Tip: You can choose Phuket Old Town instead of Patong for a quieter and calmer stay with more vibe. It’s also a good central location.
Krabi stands out for its surreal natural beauty and dramatic landscapes. Visitors are drawn to its huge rocky cliffs. The area offers multiple islands for island hopping. Ao Nang's beaches are lively and convenient, while Railay Beach is only accessible by boat. Therefore, not only are the islands fascinating to visit, but even the journey to reach them becomes a memorable part of the experience.
Ayutthaya is a famous city in Thailand that many guides only mention in passing, but it deserves more attention. Located about 80 km (50–55 miles) north of Bangkok, Ayutthaya was once one of the world’s largest and most advanced cities from the 14th to the 18th centuries. Today, its UNESCO-listed historical park is full of temple ruins, old monasteries, and the iconic Buddha head wrapped in tree roots at Wat Mahathat.
Tribe Travel Tip: Rent a bicycle at the Ayutthaya train station. The historical park is flat and easy to ride around, and the ruins look especially beautiful from a bike at sunset.
Pattaya is about 2 hours from Bangkok on the eastern Gulf Coast and offers both buzzing nightlife and a surprisingly strong range of family-friendly attractions. In fact, many Indian families love visiting Pattaya for its exciting attractions and the wide range of Indian food options available. The Sanctuary of Truth, a wooden temple built without any nails, is one of the most unique sights in Thailand.
Tribe Travel Tip: Pattaya Beach isn’t very clean. For a better beach day, go straight to Koh Larn Island.
Chiang Rai feels like Chiang Mai before it became crowded. Although it attracts fewer tourists, the city is home to some of Thailand's most striking temples, making it well worth a visit. It’s also the starting point for visiting tribal villages along the Mekong River that have been there for centuries. The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) are truly unique, built in recent decades and stunning to see.
