If you've been living in or visiting Abu Dhabi for a while, chances are you've done the usual: the Louvre, the Grand Mosque, maybe a desert safari. But if you haven't paddled through the mangroves yet, you're genuinely missing one of the most underrated experiences the city has to offer. This blog has everything you need to know about Mangrove kayaking in Abu Dhabi.

The most popular spot for mangrove kayaking in Abu Dhabi is Eastern Mangroves National Park, located along the Eastern Ring Road near the Eastern Mangroves Promenade & Hotel. It's remarkably close to the city, so you're not driving an hour into the desert. Within minutes of leaving the urban sprawl, you're gliding through dense, tangled mangrove tunnels with nothing but birdsong and the sound of your paddle breaking the water.
The mangrove forest here is part of a protected natural reserve and covers a significant stretch of Abu Dhabi's coastline. These aren't just pretty trees. Mangroves play a critical role in the ecosystem, acting as nurseries for fish and feeding grounds for migratory birds.

Most kayaking tours in the Eastern Mangroves last between 1.5 to 2 hours, and they're suitable for all fitness levels, including complete beginners. The water is calm and shallow, so there's very little risk involved. You'll be given a sit-on-top kayak and a quick briefing before heading out.
Once you're on the water, the pace is entirely your own. You'll paddle through narrow channels where the mangrove roots arch overhead, creating natural green tunnels. Keep your eyes open: flamingos, herons, and cormorants are commonly spotted here, especially during the cooler months between October and April, which is also the peak season for birdwatching in Abu Dhabi.

Early morning is hands-down the best time for mangrove kayaking in Abu Dhabi. The light is golden, the temperature is cooler, and the wildlife is most active. Sunset paddles are equally stunning if you prefer a more atmospheric experience.
Avoid heading out during the summer months (June to August) unless you're going very early, as the heat and humidity can make it genuinely uncomfortable on the open water.
Tours typically cost around AED 150–200 per person, depending on the duration and whether it's a guided group tour or a private session.
Prefer going solo? You can also rent kayaks independently from a few spots along the promenade if you'd rather explore at your own pace.
In a city that moves fast, the mangroves genuinely slow things down. There's something almost meditative about paddling through still water surrounded by nature, especially knowing you're only a few kilometres from one of the busiest urban centres in the UAE.
If you’re a tourist wanting something beyond the typical sightseeing checklist, mangrove kayaking delivers something rare: quiet, natural beauty right on the city's doorstep.
So just pack sunscreen, a water bottle, and a sense of adventure. The mangroves are waiting.
