Spend your day with us browsing Ningyocho, a charming neighborhood known for its special, traditional souvenirs and goods made right here in Japan and get some insight to the foods and snacks the Japanese people eat and typical items they use in everyday life. Local Impact: How you will help the local community by joining this tour: All the bars, restaurants you visit on your tour are 100% owned and run by locals. On this tour you will visit the various 100+-year-old family-owned businesses and help maintain and support unique Japanese crafts, food, and culture, which will help keep these important traditions alive. Spend your day with us browsing for traditional souvenirs and goods – made right here in Japan! Gain some insight into the foods and snacks that Japanese people eat and the typical items they use in everyday life. We’ll start the tour in the neighbourhood of Ningyocho, a district known for its old traditions and, as you’ll soon discover, some very tasty treats. We’ll visit several shops that have been around for over 100 years, many of which are still family-owned and operated and specialise in unique goods made right here in Japan. To kick things off, we’ll try some Ningyoyaki cakes, a true Tokyo specialty. This is a small sponge cake with sweet red bean filling and made in different shapes. We’ll also visit a shop that specialises in a traditional snack: senbei (rice crackers), a favorite in many Japanese households. There are many other shops selling Japanese sweets, snacks, or drinks around this street. We especially recommend the Wagyu beef sukiyaki croquettes made by the famous sukiyaki restaurant Imahan. On a small street lined with izakaya (Japanese-style pubs) where neighbors stop by, there is a Japanese-style hotel, an old-fashioned ryokan. Your Tokyo tour will next lead you to one of the eight shrines where virtue, longevity, learning, and wealth are worshipped. Once we’ve exhausted Ningyocho, we’ll visit another neighbourhood nearby, Nihonbashi. The district of Nihonbashi was a hub for merchants during the Edo period. Today, it is predominantly a financial district that houses trading firms and even the Tokyo Stock Exchange. And although Nihonbashi is very much a modern neighbourhood, it features many traditional Japanese shops hidden in its alleyways and even within its department stores. We’ll visit a Japanese traditional Washi paper store that was established in 1653 (the Edo Period). You’ll get to browse through their museum to watch archives that contain thousands of ancient documents from 360 years of history and Japanese traditional paper. You can purchase high-grade handmade paper products and fine products used by discerning artists from all over the world. We will pass by "Avatar Robot Cafe", an experimental cafe where employees who have difficulty leaving the house provide services by remotely controlling a robot. We’ll also discover a toothpick shop that has been in business since 1704, where you will be able to check out delicate handmade toothpicks, plus other handmade items carved from Kuromoji or Lindera umbellata trees. Also, we may visit the kitchen knife shop, brush shop, gold flake shop or Dashi (soup stock) Shop.

Enjoy Osaka's famous street food and hidden back alleys. Experience an unforgettable stroll through the historical food streets of Osaka and spend an evening like the locals of Japan’s 3rd largest city! This 3-hour Osaka Night Food Tour will take you on an unforgettable eating excursion through the busy streets and the hidden, less frequented parts of Minami (South) Osaka. Starting on the bright and busy Doutonburi area we will learn about Glico man, a Filipino sprinter named Fortunato Catalon who inspired a nation and a company! Similar to Shibuya (its counterpart in Tokyo) the lights and sounds of Dotounburi often lead you astray to overly-commercialized restaurants with queues of tourists outside. We want to take our guests to places they would certainly miss without a local’s guidance. We will take secret alleys not long after we begin the tour toward the shrine wedged out of sight from the average passerby. We will sample, Kushikatsu, (deep-fried meat and veggie skewers) a local take on Yakitori and we will surprise you with a Michelin-rated street food stop for Osaka’s favourite snack– Takoyaki! (a kind of grilled octopus fritter) Next, travel down more narrow alleys and see some of the more unconventional restaurants and pubs. Your guide will then lead you to a local dinner spot. This shop is an Izakaya or local pub with seasonal dishes that will intrigue and delight. You will get to try regional dishes and 1 drink. This spot is very local, you will not find tourists here! Try a draft beer or Nihonshu (rice wine) with your tasty meal. From there, we will show you a famous building full of hidden unorthodox bars, one after another. Every 5 feet there is a new door with a new adventure to be had. This area gives you the retro, artsy feel of a very hip and unique cluster of bars. Finally, finish off with a tasty local street food dessert! As you say farewell to your guide you can explore more on your own in this fascinating part of town. Important information - There may be a restriction We are unable to cater for people with gluten-free dietary requirements on this tour. Itinerary The construction of Osaka Castle (Ōsakajō) started in 1583 on the former site of the Ishiyama Honganji Temple, which had been destroyed by Oda Nobunaga thirteen years earlier. Toyotomi Hideyoshi intended the castle to become the center of a new, unified Japan under Toyotomi rule. It was the largest castle at the time. However, a few years after Hideyoshi's death, Tokugawa troops attacked and destroyed the castle and terminated the Toyotomi lineage in 1615. Osaka Castle was rebuilt by Tokugawa Hidetada in the 1620s, but its main castle tower was struck by lightening in 1665 and burnt down. It was not until 1931 that the present ferro-concrete reconstruction of the castle tower was built. During the war it miraculously survived the city wide air raids. Major repair works gave the castle new glamor in 1997. The castle tower is now entirely modern on the inside and even features an elevator for easier accessibility. It houses an informative museum about the castle's history and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes. Ticket not included. Tsutenkaku Towerhinsekai ("New World") is a district in Osaka that was developed before the war and then neglected in the decades afterwards. At the district's center stands Tsutenkaku Tower, the nostalgia-evoking symbol of Shinsekai. The area was developed into its current layout following the success of the 1903 National Industrial Exposition, which brought over five million people to the neighborhood within just five months. Shortly after the expo closed its doors, work began to improve and update Shinsekai. Duration: 30 minutes. Ticket not included. Standing 300 meters tall, Abeno Harukas in Osaka is the tallest skyscraper in Japan. The building stands on top of the Kintetsu Osaka Abenobashi Station and is conveniently located across from JR Tennoji Station. It houses a department store, an art museum, a hotel and an observation deck. The observation deck is called "Harukas 300" and occupies the building's top three floors (floors 58 to 60). The observation deck is accessed by elevators from the 16th floor. With large floor-to-ceiling glass panels all around, the 60th floor offers 360 degree views of Osaka, while the 58th floor features an attractively designed inner court with a wooden deck and cafe. A souvenir shop and restrooms with views are also available. Duration: 1 hour. Ticket not included. The Umeda Sky Building is a spectacular high rise building in the Kita district of Osaka, near Osaka and Umeda Stations. It is also known as the "New Umeda City". Duration: 1 hour. Ticket not included. A bustling commercial street that is representative of the Minami area of Osaka, always busy with playhouses and food shops from the Edo Period to today. Duration: 1 hour. Ticket not included. Namba Yasaka Shrine has one of the most unique buildings of any shrine in the world! This Osaka shrine's iconic lion head-shaped building was built in the 1970s and isn't actually very old. However, the shrine itself has a long history, and its annual festival held in January(which incorporates an awesome tug-of-war competition) is designated as an intangible folk cultural property by the Japanese government. Duration: 30 minutes. Shinsaibashi-Suji Shopping Street, which runs east to Mido-Suji Avenue, is the best-known shopping area in Osaka, and an enduring symbol of the city. With a history of 380 years, it was already an established shopping area in the Edo Period. Shops of all kinds and for all ages line the street, a roofed arcade 600 meters long. There are traditional kimono tailors, western clothing and footwear retailers, restaurants and fast food outlets, jewelers, and boutiques featuring the latest fashions. It?'s great to take a casual stroll through the Shinsaibashi area. Many people enjoy window-shopping and savoring the food along the way. Duration: 1 hour.
