There are only a few places on Earth where you can see trees older than most nations, cliffs that rise straight out of a valley and waterfalls crashing down all in one place. That’s Yosemite National Park, one of California’s most loved destinations. Whether you like spending time in nature with a hike or feel small standing amongst giant sequoia trees, this guide walks you through everything you need to know for a vacation in Yosemite National Park: when to go, what to see and where to stay.

Where Is Yosemite National Park Located?

Yosemite sits in the Sierra Nevada mountains of central California, roughly midway up the state. Protected since 1890, the park spans close to 1,200 square miles of granite peaks, alpine meadows, and forest, making it one of the oldest national parks in the country.

Most holidays centre on Yosemite Valley, a narrow strip carved by ancient glaciers that holds most of the famous landmarks people come to see. From here, San Francisco is about three and a half hours away by road, Sacramento is roughly three hours, and Los Angeles sits at the far end, five to six hours south. Sequoia and Kings Canyon are the closest neighbouring parks, a couple of hours further south, so pairing them into one longer vacation is fairly common among nature lovers.

What Is the Closest Airport to Yosemite National Park?

Flying in is usually the fastest way to start your holiday, and the airport you pick depends on convenience versus how near you want to land.

Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) is generally the most practical choice, about 65 miles from the park and roughly 90 minutes from Yosemite Valley by car. It has direct connections to several major American cities, decent car rental counters, and far less traffic than the bigger Bay Area airports.

If Fresno does not suit your route, a few alternatives exist:

  • Merced Regional Airport (MCE) – smaller, about two hours from the valley
  • Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MMH) – seasonal, useful only when Tioga Pass is open
  • San Francisco International (SFO) – a bigger international hub, about three and a half hours away

Driving up from Fresno along Highway 41 is scenic in its own right, winding past forested foothills before dropping you straight into the valley, so set aside a little extra time to enjoy the views rather than rushing through.

Tribe Travel Tip: Reserve your car as soon as your flight is confirmed. Vehicles near the park sell out fast during the warmer months.

Which City Is Closest to Yosemite National Park?

Beyond airports, it helps to know which towns can serve as your base or a comfortable stopover on the way in.

Mariposa often comes up as the answer, sitting about thirty minutes from the park's Arch Rock entrance with a solid range of hotels, restaurants, and small shops for an overnight stay. If you want a bigger city with more flight and dining choices, Fresno is your best bet, connected by direct flights from many parts of the country and about ninety minutes from the valley by car.

Other useful gateway towns include Oakhurst near the South Entrance, El Portal near Arch Rock, and Groveland close to the Big Oak Flat Entrance, each offering a smaller, quieter alternative to staying inside the park itself.

Tribe Travel Tip: Staying just outside the park in one of these towns can save you a fair amount compared to in-park lodges, without adding much to your drive time.

What Is the Best Month to Visit Yosemite National Park?

ImageYosemite changes character completely depending on when you show up, so timing your holiday well makes a real difference.

  • May – waterfalls are at their fullest from melting snow, wildflowers are blooming, and the summer rush has not yet arrived.
  • September – warm days, thinner crowds, and every road still open before winter closures begin.
  • June to August – the busiest season and the fullest access, since Glacier Point, Tioga Road, and Tuolumne Meadows are all open and the weather stays reliably warm, though parking lots and hotel rates get packed.
  • December to February – the valley turns into a quiet, snow-dusted escape, though Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road close for the season.

Season

Months

What to Expect

Spring

March to May

Roaring waterfalls, wildflowers, cool evenings

Summer

June to August

All roads open, warm weather, heavy crowds

Fall

September to November

Fewer visitors, crisp air, golden colours

Winter

Tribe Travel Tip: If you want the waterfalls at their loudest without fighting for a parking spot, aim for late May or the first week of June.

What Are the Best Places to Visit in Yosemite National Park?

ImageYosemite rewards you no matter how much time you have, but a handful of spots deserve a permanent place on your list.

  • Yosemite Valley – where most holidays begin and end. This glacier-carved basin holds El Capitan, Half Dome, and Yosemite Falls, all visible from short, mostly flat walking paths. Even a short stroll near Sentinel Bridge rewards you with a postcard reflection of Half Dome in the Merced River.
  • Tunnel View – one sweeping frame of El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall together, and often the very first proper look visitors get of the valley as they drive in.
  • Glacier Point – about an hour's drive from the valley floor, rewarding you with a sweeping view over the entire basin, with Half Dome rising almost to eye level in the distance.
  • Mariposa Grove – protects some of the park's oldest giant sequoias, including trees that have stood for well over a thousand years, and sits conveniently close to the South Entrance.
  • Tuolumne Meadows – reached along Tioga Road, trades the busy valley for open subalpine grassland surrounded by granite domes, staying noticeably quieter even in peak season.

Tribe Travel Tip: If your holiday only allows one full day, split it between the valley floor in the morning and Glacier Point in the late afternoon for the best light.

What Are the Best Things to Do in Yosemite National Park?

ImageOnce you are settled in, the real question becomes how to spend your days, and Yosemite has options for nearly every energy level.

  • Hike the Mist Trail to Vernal and Nevada Falls, one of the most popular short hikes in the park, especially rewarding when the falls run full in spring.
  • Walk to the base of Yosemite Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the world, along an easy paved path.
  • Drive the Tioga Road, a scenic high-altitude route past Tenaya Lake and Olmsted Point, open only from late spring until the first snowfall.
  • Rent a bike and ride the valley's flat, paved paths for an easy way to cover more ground without the crowds on foot.
  • Watch rock climbers scale El Capitan, one of the most famous granite walls in the climbing world.
  • Join a ranger-led program to learn about the park's geology, wildlife, and history straight from the experts on site.
  • Stargaze from Glacier Point or Tuolumne Meadows, where the high elevation and limited light pollution make for a properly clear night sky.

For those who prefer a slower pace, simply sitting by the Merced River with a book or a picnic can be just as memorable as any hike.

Tribe Travel Tip: Permits for Half Dome's cable section are awarded through a lottery, so apply well ahead if summiting is on your wishlist.

Where Should You Stay? Best Yosemite National Park Hotels

Where you rest each night shapes your whole holiday, and Yosemite gives you a wide spread of choices, from historic lodges inside the park to simple motels in nearby towns.

Inside the park, options range from the grand to the practical:

  • The Ahwahnee – a National Historic Landmark with a fireplace-lit lobby, ideal if you want a proper splash of luxury.
  • Yosemite Valley Lodge – comfortable rooms a short walk from Yosemite Falls, popular with first-time visitors.
  • Curry Village – tent cabins and simple rooms, a favourite for families who want to stay in the valley at a friendlier price.

If in-park lodging is full, which happens quickly during peak season, the gateway towns of Mariposa, Oakhurst, El Portal, and Groveland all carry a solid range of hotels and vacation rentals, usually at friendlier rates and within thirty to sixty minutes of an entrance.

FAQs

Do you need an entry reservation to visit Yosemite National Park?

ExpandCollapse

No. Yosemite is not requiring advance entry reservations in 2026, even during peak summer and the February–March firefall period;the park is instead using real-time traffic management to control congestion. Rules can change, so it's still worth a quick check of the NPS website close to your travel dates

How many days should you plan for a first Yosemite vacation?

ExpandCollapse

Three to four days gives you enough time to cover the valley, Glacier Point, and Mariposa Grove without rushing, though even a single full day is enough to enjoy the highlights ifthat’s all your holiday allows.

Is Yosemite National Park suitable for a family vacation with young children?

ExpandCollapse

Yes. Many valley trails are flat and paved, and ranger programs are designed with younger visitors in mind, making it an easy park to enjoy as a family.

Is mobile signal reliable inside Yosemite National Park?

ExpandCollapse

Signal is patchy at best in the valley and almost nonexistent in the high country, so download offline maps and share your plans with someone before heading out for the day.
