Airports in Thailand: Complete Guide to International & Domestic Airports (2026)

Thailand has more than one airport for almost every region you might be flying into, and picking the wrong one can add hours to a holiday you spent months planning. Bangkok alone runs two; the islands each have their own, and Pattaya doesn’t have one at all. Whether you’re comparing Suvarnabhumi against Don Mueang, checking direct flights from India, or working out how visa rules apply on arrival, this guide covers everything you need to know about airports in Thailand.

Major International Airports in Thailand

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

ImageSuvarnabhumi is Bangkok's primary international gateway and handles almost all long-haul international flights into the country. It's the airport most first-time visitors land at, and the default choice if you're flying with a full-service international carrier.

  • Category: International
  • Terminals: 1 main terminal, plus the SAT-1 satellite terminal
  • Distance from Bangkok city centre: About 30 km
  • Key airlines: Thai Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Air India

Tribe Travel Tip: If you fly with a full-service international airline, you will almost always arrive here. Make sure to check which Bangkok airport your return flight leaves from. Many people assume it's the same airport they arrived at, but that's not always the case.

Don Mueang International Airport (DMK)

ImageDon Mueang is Bangkok's older airport and now handles most of the city's budget and regional carrier traffic. It sits closer to the city centre than Suvarnabhumi, though the two aren't rail-connected.

  • Category: International
  • Terminals: 2 terminals (international and domestic)
  • Distance from Bangkok city centre: About 25 km
  • Key airlines: AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, Nok Air, Thai AirAsia

Phuket International Airport (HKT)

ImagePhuket is Thailand's busiest airport outside Bangkok and the main gateway to the Andaman coast. It sits on the north of the island, so onward transfer time depends heavily on which beach you're headed to.

  • Category: International
  • Terminals: 2 terminals (Domestic and International)
  • Distance from Phuket Town / Patong: About 32 km / 41 km
  • Key airlines: Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific

Tribe Travel Tip: Patong, Kata, and Rawai are all on the other side of the island from the airport, so plan for about an hour to get there, no matter the traffic. Booking a private transfer in advance is usually cheaper than grabbing a taxi when you arrive.

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX)

ImageChiang Mai International Airport in Thailand is the main gateway to the north, and it's unusually close to the city, which makes it one of the easiest airports in Thailand to get in and out of.

  • Category: International
  • Terminals: 1 terminal building, split into domestic and international sections
  • Distance from city centre: About 4 km
  • Key airlines: Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Nok Air

Krabi Airport (KBV)

ImageKrabi Airport serves the limestone cliffs, beaches, and island-hopping routes on Thailand's southwest coast. Railay itself has no road access, so getting there always involves a short boat ride from Ao Nang.

  • Category: International
  • Terminals: 2 passenger terminals
  • Distance from Krabi Town / Ao Nang: About 14 km / 26 km
  • Key airlines: Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways

Tribe Travel Tip: If you want to go straight to Railay or Ton Sai Beach, it's smart to book your hotel's car and boat transfer in advance. This matters even more if you arrive in the evening, because boats run less often at that time.

Samui International Airport (USM)

ImageSamui Airport is privately operated by Bangkok Airways and features a unique open-air design. Since Koh Phangan does not have its own airport in Thailand, you will need to take a ferry from Samui to get there.

  • Category: International
  • Terminals: Domestic and international terminals within the same open-air complex
  • Distance from Chaweng Beach: About 2 km
  • Key airlines: Bangkok Airways, Scoot

As of now, you can book nonstop flights from India to Phuket with a number of airlines. These airlines are IndiGo, Air India, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet. However, these options usually rely on the selected departure city and the travel date.

Even though some airlines  fly to Phuket with a stop in Bangkok instead of offering nonstop service, such as Thai Airways. If you want a direct flight, make sure your ticket clearly says 'nonstop' so you don't end up with an unexpected layover.

Facilities at Thailand Airports

Major airports like Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, and Phuket all provide a similar range of facilities.

  • SIM cards and eSIMs: You can find counters for AIS, dtac, and True Move selling SIM cards and eSIMs both before and after security.
  • Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi is available throughout AOT airports, though each session usually has a time limit.
  • Lounges: Lounges are available at Suvarnabhumi and, to a lesser extent, at Phuket and Chiang Mai. You can access them with airline status, certain credit cards, or by buying a day pass.
  • Duty-free and shopping: Suvarnabhumi has a wide range of duty-free and shopping options, while regional airports like Krabi or Samui offer fewer choices.
  • Dining: Major hubs have everything from fast food to sit-down restaurants. Smaller regional airports have fewer dining options.
  • Medical centres: Medical centres are available at Suvarnabhumi, Phuket, and Chiang Mai to help with minor emergencies.

Things to do if you have a long layover:

  • Check out the duty-free shops for cosmetics, electronics, and Thai snacks.
  • You can book a massage or spa session, which are easy to find in both domestic and international terminals.
  • Consider getting a lounge day pass if you want a shower, some food, and a quieter spot to relax while you wait.
  • You can visit the prayer rooms and kids' play zones available at most major terminals

Entry Rules and Travel Info for Indian Travellers

You will have to deal with the post-disembarkation procedure at airports in thailand, and for that, the following section is quite helpful.

1. Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) Requirements

  • Complete the TDAC online within 72 hours before arrival.
  • Mandatory for all international travellers, regardless of visa type.
  • Keep your passport details, flight number, and accommodation information ready.
  • After submission, you'll receive a QR code.
  • Save it on your phone and carry a printed copy as a backup.

2. Visa-Free Entry for Indian Travellers

  • Thailand plans to reduce the visa-free stay from 60 days to 30 days for Indian passport holders.
  • The new rule will apply only after it is officially published.
  • Check the latest visa rules on the Royal Thai Embassy website or with your airline before travelling.

3. Immigration Counter

  • Go through passport control before collecting your baggage.
  • Keep your return ticket, hotel booking, and proof of sufficient funds with you.
  • You may carry these documents in your hand luggage for better convenience.
  • Be prepared for longer queues at Suvarnabhumi Airport during evening peak hours.

4. Baggage Claim

  • Check the arrival screens to find your baggage carousel.
  • Collect your luggage before heading to customs.
  • Suvarnabhumi and Phuket airports offer baggage storage for long layovers or early arrivals.

5. Customs Check

  • Try using the green channel if you have nothing to declare.
  • Use the red channel for restricted items, excess duty-free goods, or large amounts of currency.
  • Keep receipts for high-value electronics, as random baggage checks may take place.

6. Currency Exchange Counters

  • Currency exchange counters are available in every arrivals hall.
  • Airport exchange rates are usually less favourable than those in the city.
  • ATMs are widely available but may charge foreign transaction fees.

Before You Go

Choosing the right airport in Thailand before you book can help you avoid a long and unexpected transfer when you arrive. Make sure the airport matches your real destination, not just the lowest price. Check which Bangkok airport your flight uses, and allow extra time if you have a connecting flight. If you’re planning a Thailand getaway that includes several cities, the islands, and Bangkok, our Holiday Tribe advisors can help you pick the best airports for each part of your journey.
