France Visa for Indians Explained: Requirements, Fees & Process 2026

France is a destination that moves easily between different moods, from the streets of Paris and the charm of the French Riviera to quiet villages and vineyard landscapes. If France is next on your travel list, the first thing to arrange is your visa. The good news is that the France visa for Indians process is straightforward when you know what's required.

This guide gives you all the key details about the France visa for Indians, such as visa types, documents needed, fees, how to apply, and how long it takes. With this information, you can plan your holiday easily.

Do Indians need a visa for France?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a valid visa to travel to France for tourism. France does not offer visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry for Indian citizens. You must apply before you travel, and the visa must be approved before you leave India. The process is clear and simple if you have all your documents ready.

What Type of Visa Do Indian Travellers Need for France?

For tourism, Indians need a Short-Stay Schengen Visa (Type C) for France. This visa lets you stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period and is usually valid in all 29 Schengen countries, unless your visa sticker says otherwise. Since the list of Schengen countries can change, check the official France-Visas website before you travel.

You can apply for one of the following:

  • Single-entry visa: Allows one entry into the Schengen Area. Once you leave, the visa can no longer be used.
  • Multiple-entry visa: Allows multiple entries during the visa's validity, provided you do not exceed the 90-day limit within any 180-day period.

Multiple-entry visas may be issued with validity ranging from 6 months to 5 years, depending on your travel history and the decision of the French consular authorities.

Tribe Travel Tip: If you have a good travel history and are applying for your second or third French visa, you can request a multiple-entry visa in your cover letter. Approval is at the discretion of the consular officer.

What are the France visa requirements for Indian citizens?

To be eligible for a French tourist visa, you need to meet these conditions:

  • Your passport must be less than 10 years old and valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen Area.
  • A passport must have at least 2 blank pages for stamps
  • Confirmed return or onward travel tickets
  • Proof of accommodation, hotel bookings, or host invitation for the full duration of your stay
  • Travel insurance with minimum coverage of €30,000, valid across all Schengen countries
  • You should have enough funds to cover your stay, with €32.50 per day used as a general reference in certain cases.
  • Strong ties to India showing intent to return, such as employment, property or family

How to apply for a French visa from India?

Start by applying online through the official France-Visas portal. After that, bring your documents in person to a visa application centre. Follow these steps to complete the process.

  1. Complete the online application by filling out the visa form on the France Visas portal. Enter your personal details, travel plans, and the reason for your visit.
  2. After submitting your application, print and sign the form. If you notice a mistake later, print a corrected version and bring it to your appointment, as you cannot make changes online.
  3. Book an appointment at the visa application centre closest to you. During busy periods, centres in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru may be fully booked 3 to 4 weeks in advance, so it’s best to schedule early.
  4. Gather all the required documents and arrange them in the order requested before your appointment.
  5. Go to the centre in person to submit your documents. Your photo and fingerprints will be taken for biometrics. Children under 12 do not need to give fingerprints. If you have already provided Schengen biometrics in the past 59 months, you may not need to do it again.
  6. Use your application reference number to check your visa status on the tracking portal.
  7. Once your application is processed, you can collect your passport from the centre or choose courier delivery if it is available.

At Holiday Tribe, our advisors help you with the visa process and plan your France itinerary. This way, you get support with both travel planning and paperwork, so you do not have to manage it all by yourself.

Tribe Travel Tip: Apply as early as you can. You can send in your application up to 6 months before your holiday, but not later than 15 days before you leave.

What are the France visa fees for Indians?

The France visa fees for Indian applicants follow the official Schengen fee structure, which changed in June 2024.

Adults (18 years and above)

€90 (approx. ₹8,100 to ₹8,400)

Children aged 6 to 12

€45 (approx. ₹4,000 to ₹4,200)

Children under 6 years

Free

A few important points about fees:

  • Visa fees are non-refundable, regardless of whether the visa is approved or denied.
  • A separate service fee applies on top of the consular fee. Confirm the current service charge before your appointment, as this changes periodically.
  • The consular fee is payable in Indian Rupees at the prevailing exchange rate on the day of your appointment.

Tribe Travel Tip: Check the accepted payment methods at your visa application centre before you go, since cash, card and cheque options can vary by location.

How long does France visa processing take?

The standard processing time for a French visa for Indians is 15 working days from the date of submission. In some cases, this may be extended up to 45 calendar days. This starts when your application reaches the Embassy, not when you submit it.

A few things that affect the timeline:

  • Incomplete or missing documents cause delays and may require you to resubmit.
  • Peak travel months (March to June and October to December) see higher volumes and longer waits.
  • The Embassy may request an interview or additional documents in some cases.

Why do France visa applications get rejected?

The Embassy does not always explain a refusal in detail, but the most common reasons are:

  • Insufficient Financial Proof: Your bank statements should show enough funds to cover your holiday expenses.
  • Inconsistent Travel Plans: Make sure your itinerary, flight bookings, hotel reservations, and supporting documents match.
  • Incomplete Application: Check that all required documents are submitted and your application form is correctly filled out and signed.
  • Invalid Travel Insurance: Your insurance must provide at least €30,000 in coverage and be valid across all Schengen countries.
  • Passport Validity Issues: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from the Schengen Area.
