Sri Lanka is famous for its golden beaches, ancient temples, wildlife parks, and central highlands. The Kandy to Ella train is one of the country’s top experiences, taking you past tea estates, waterfalls, mountain tunnels, and small hill-country stations.
The road distance from Kandy to Ella is about 140 km, but the train takes a longer, more scenic path through the highlands. In 2026, part of the railway is still closed after Cyclone Dithwa, so trains run from Nanu Oya to Badulla, passing through Ella.

The Kandy to Ella train does not run its full route in 2026. In November 2025, Cyclone Ditwah hit Sri Lanka’s central highlands, causing 159 landslides, 95 washouts, and major damage to the hill country railway.
Here is the current status:
To travel in 2026, take a private car from Kandy to Nanu Oya station, which takes about 2.5 hours by road. From Nanu Oya, board the train to Badulla and get off at Ella.

The distance from Kandy to Ella is approximately 140 km by road. The rail route is longer at around 150 km, as the track winds through highland curves and gradients.
When fully operational, the Kandy to Ella train takes 7 to 9 hours. Journey times can vary depending on operational conditions, so allow some flexibility in your itinerary.
