Flight schedules may be limited, so check schedules ahead of your holiday.
After you arrive at a Maldives international airport, you’ll still need to get to your resort island. Most resorts don’t have their own airports, so transfers are part of every holiday. There are three main ways to reach your resort:
Transfer Type | Duration | Approx. Cost Per Person (one-way) | Luggage Limit | Operates |
Seaplane | 15 to 45 mins | $300 to $600 | 20 kg | Daylight hours only |
Speedboat | 30 mins to 2 hrs | $50 to $300 | 25 to 30 kg | 24 hours |
Domestic Flight | 30 to 90 mins | $80 to $200 | 20 kg | Scheduled times |
Seaplanes offer the most scenic way to reach your resort. They fly straight from Velana’s Noovilu Seaplane Terminal to the islands, giving you great views of the atolls and lagoons. Most routes are run by Trans Maldivian Airways and Manta Air. Seaplanes only fly during the day, so if you arrive at night, you’ll need to stay at a hotel near the airport and transfer the next morning. Be sure to book your seaplane in advance, especially during busy months.
Speedboats operate 24/7 and are the most flexible way to get to your resort. Most resorts within two hours of the main airport use speedboats for transfers. They work for both day and night arrivals and are usually used for resorts that are close by.
If your resort is near airports such as Kadhdhoo, Kooddoo, or Fuvahmulah, which are far from Malé, taking a domestic flight is usually the best option. This is also true if you fly into a regional airport near your resort, like Gan in the south or Hanimaadhoo in the north, instead of going through Velana.
Reaching a Maldives resort involves more than booking a flight. Seaplane schedules, luggage limits, and transfer times all matter, so planning ahead will make your trip much easier. Here are some things to remember before you travel.
The Maldives has a unique airport network designed to help travellers reach their island resorts across the ocean. Knowing which airport in Maldives serves your atoll, your transfer options, and how to plan for seaplane schedules can really improve your holiday.
If you’re flying into Velana or another regional Maldives international airport, a bit of planning makes everything easier. Ready to book your Maldives getaway? Get in touch with Holiday Tribe, and we’ll handle every detail, from your flights to your resort transfer.
