Bali has left a certain image in everyone's mind: beaches, surfers, beach clubs, and lively evenings. But you can hardly fit Ubud into that picture. This part of the island is often described through its green rice terraces, ancient temples, and thick forests. But Ubud is much more than what is usually said about it. It has a unique Hindu culture, traditional temples, a strong connection with art, and an atmosphere that feels calmer than Bali's coastal areas.

So, Ubud Bali is a place that asks you to slow down and experience things at your own pace. In this guide, you will know exactly what to see, how to get there, and how many days you actually need, so you are not just winging it once you arrive.

Why Is Ubud So Famous?

Ubud sits inland, away from Bali's beaches, and that's exactly why it feels different. It's known as the island's cultural and spiritual centre, and once you're there, it's easy to see why.

  • Old temples everywhere: You will find temples in caves, beside rivers, and across the town, each with its own charm.
  • Rice terraces that actually look like the photos: The green, stepped fields are beautiful and worth walking through.
  • A strong art scene: Ubud has plenty of art galleries, workshops, and local craft studios to visit.
  • Luxury resorts beside centuries-old temples: Modern resorts often sit close to old temples and shrines, creating an interesting mix of old and new.

What Are the 10 Best Places to Visit in Ubud?

In the following list, you will find the top 10 places to visit in Ubud to make the most out of your holiday.

Place

Why Go

Tegallalang Rice Terrace

Classic stepped rice fields, best for photos and short walks

Tegenungan Waterfall

Easy to reach, with a short steep descent of around 10 to 15 minutes to the base from the entrance

Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave)

Ancient cave temple, cool and shaded on a hot day

Tirta Empul Temple

Holy water temple where you can join a purification bath

Batuan Temple

One of Ubud's oldest temples, known for its intricate stone carvings and classic tiered architecture

Ubud Monkey Forest

Sacred forest sanctuary right in the centre of town

Campuhan Ridge Walk

Easy walking trail with wide open valley views

Ubud Art Market

Local crafts, textiles, and souvenirs

Puri Saren Palace

Royal palace right in central Ubud, free to walk through

Museum Puri Lukisan

Ubud's oldest art museum, a good primer before gallery-hopping

What Are the Best Things to Do in Ubud?

Beyond the sightseeing list, a few experiences are worth building your day around.

  • Coffee tasting: Visit a local café or coffee place and try different types of Balinese coffee.
  • Bali Swing Ubud: Try a Bali swing, preferably around sunrise or sunset, when the light makes the photos look better.
  • Rice paddy walk: Walk through the rice fields around Tegallalang instead of only stopping at a viewpoint to take photos.
  • Local warung lunch: Eat at a small local warung and try traditional Balinese food away from the busy tourist areas.
  • Gallery hopping: Visit different art galleries around Ubud and see paintings, crafts, and other works by local artists.

What Is the Best Time to Visit Ubud?

Ubud Bali weather stays warm and tropical year-round, but the season still changes how your days feel.

  • April to October: This is the dry season, with less rainfall and better conditions for sightseeing, hiking, and exploring the rice terraces. July and August are usually the busiest.
  • November to March: The wet season brings more frequent rain, usually in short and heavy showers. The countryside looks greener, and you will generally find fewer crowds.
  • Best time for outdoor activities: The dry season is the safer choice if your plans include long walks, waterfalls, or countryside activities.
  • For fewer crowds: Consider visiting around April, May, September, or October, when the weather is still generally pleasant but the busiest months have passed.

How to Reach Ubud from Bali Airport?

Ubud sits around 35 to 40 kilometres from Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar), and the route runs north through Denpasar and Gianyar before climbing into the hills.

  • By car or private transfer: You can hire a taxi or book a private car from the airport. It usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, but traffic can make the journey longer.
  • By shared shuttle: You share the vehicle with other travellers. It can cost less than a private car, but the shuttle may stop to pick up or drop off other passengers.
  • By bus: This is generally the cheapest option, but it takes longer and may not be as convenient or direct as a private car.

Tribe Travel Tip: Avoid arriving during late afternoon or evening rush hour if you can. Traffic near the airport gets heavy fast.

How Many Days Are Enough for Ubud?

Two to three days is generally enough to see Ubud properly without rushing.

1 day

One temple, one rice terrace, a coffee stop

2 days

Temples, waterfalls, Monkey Forest, art market

3+ days

All of the above, plus Kintamani, cooking class, spa time

Where to Stay in Ubud?

Finding a stay becomes much easier once you know which area aligns with your preferences. Especially in a place like Ubud, there is no shortage of hotels and resorts. Ubud Bali hotels come in a broad range, from simple stays in the heart of town to boutique properties surrounded by greenery. The same goes for Ubud Bali resorts, with plenty of options if you prefer a quieter stay away from the busy centre.

  • Central Ubud: Best for first-time visitors, walkable to the market, galleries, and cafes without needing much transport
  • Sayan: Home to Ubud's luxury resorts, known for river valley and jungle views
  • Tegallalang: Quieter surroundings, close to the rice fields, good for waking up to that view
  • Penestanan: A more laid-back pocket of town, strong on cafes and wellness stays, popular with longer-stay travellers

What Food Is Ubud Famous For

Ubud's food scene works on three levels, and knowing the difference helps you plan your meals better.

  • Warungs: Small, local, and cheap, this is where you'll find babi guling (suckling pig) and bebek betutu (slow-cooked duck), two Balinese classics worth trying at least once
  • Cafes: Ubud has many good cafés that serve quality coffee and brunch-style food. Even if you are not a regular coffee drinker, you may still enjoy visiting these cafés.
  • Fine dining: A handful of standout restaurants offer proper tasting menus, good for one dressed-up night during your stay

Mixing all three across your visit gives a far better sense of Ubud than sticking to one type of place.

Ubud Travel Tips

  • Carry a light rain jacket; even in dry season, showers can appear quickly
  • Wear a sarong when visiting temples; most sites provide one if you don't have your own
  • To avoid any future issues, it's better to book Bali Swing Ubud slots in advance during peak season.
  • Wear proper shoes for waterfall walks; flip-flops aren't ideal on the paths
  • Keep cash on hand, some smaller warungs and market stalls don't accept cards
